Madison River in Yellowstone National Park

The lush Madison Valley along the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park between West Yellowstone, Montana and Madison Junction in Yellowstone National Park is a favorite place to spot herds of elk. Later in the summer these green meadows will be filled with elk.

This is early July the cows have moved to nearby lodgepole pine forest to hide their young. As soon as the new born elk are able to evade coyotes and bear the herd will return to these meadows along the Madison River.

The lush green meadows along the Madison River in the Madison Valley are one of our favorite places for watching elk. I also like to marvel at the geology. In this picture the Madison River has cut a path through hard limestone to form those impressive cliffs on you see on the opposite side of the river.

The base of those limestone cliffs on the far side of the Madison River are one of the finest examples of talus slopes anywhere.

Dead trees from destructive fires can be seen littering the mountainside while new growth trees can be seen.

We see fishermen along the banks of the Madison River in this area every time we visit. Look closely and you can see one lone fisherman near the center of this picture.
